Shaders. These things are ridiculous. How does anyone know how to write them? 😅

Unity 2018.1 now offers a visual node window for shaders; haven’t spent more than a few minutes with it yet though.

I won’t be talking about shaders, only that I have been working with the Stylized Water Shader from the Unity Asset Store.

Why water? Well, a good friend expressed that it’s way more logical and fun to die in the game when you actually hit something more tangible and not just a white ground. And he simply asked “Why not just some water?” 🚿

I played so many hours with it until I finally had water that worked for me.

Trying a lot of different water shaders

Another thing was turning the simple cube platforms into something that looks more appealing and not just Unity out of the box material.

So I played around with a few materials but I didn’t come as far as I imagined.. Colors didn’t look great, metallic effects and smoothness were just not working and I didn’t know what textures could go with it 🧐

Since I was still trying to get the water shader right, I wanted to see how it would look like when the water hits the platforms. Seeing the foam on the edges. So I moved them down. And all of a sudden it was so obvious what to do with them – crates! And that’s what I did:

Ships carry crates, so that's that

Additionally I added a few more things to it to make it a full scene:
• a pirate ship as the finish line
• a small starting island made with the terrain tool in Unity
• switched some sounds from a popping sound to a splash when falling into the water
• jumping effects
• and more minor details..

And this is the result:
